Cultivating gratitude

Describe one habit that brings you joy.

When you feel grateful for what you have, what you do, what you have achieved, you find yourself happy. While it’s easy to feel a rush of joy after winning the lottery or receiving a big promotion at work, gratitude extends to the smaller blessings in life that are often overlooked or taken for granted.

Whatever your circumstances in life, every time it’s not possible to show gratitude. Many of us get caught up in a negativity bias, where we linger on bad news and unpleasant experiences, yet allow moments of positivity to fade into the background.

The idea of cultivating gratitude might sound cheesy, but research has shown that it can have very real benefits. You can use gratitude to uplift your mood, change the surroundings, find respite from negativity, foster stronger relationships, and even change the way you view yourself.

  2. I agree with your central premise. I find the whole idea of the extremes of emotion false. My own reflection on this prompt starts from a similar premise.

This article beautifully highlights the transformative power of gratitude. It’s a wonderful reminder that joy doesn’t always come from big achievements, but often from appreciating the little things we usually overlook. Cultivating gratitude truly can shift our mindset, improve our relationships, and bring lasting happiness. A simple yet powerful message—thank you for sharing!

Gratitude is wise and beneficial to appreciate whatever good fortune we luckily have.

However, gratitude can also function as a cognitive tool to repress addressing the negative reality of modern lives dominated and threatened by our extremist global political economics. Too often i hear those of a conservative and/or religious bent whitewashing the installed systemic corruption under the, “I am so blessed….” meme. Spreading a vaporous, selfish, contrived satisfaction as spiritual or sacred achievement defies the compassion born of wisdom. The deceptive nature of this ‘gratitude’ should be noted.

If gratitude functions primarily as a shot of narcissistic emotional pleasure and stress relief while combined with the dangerous denialism that has captured so many minds, then this gratitude is not something we should cultivate. Cultivating this form of gratitude as a remedy and stress relief only to then return to actions that explicitly contribute negatively and antisocially is a negative narcissism dressed up as virtue. A quick fix. It then becomes a hedonic pursuit that evidences such gratitude as a dangerous placebo. We do see this frequently in conservative and religious circles promoting various forms of extremism while sanitizing such harms under ‘gratitude.’

  17. Dear Shashwat! Your views are great. I understand gratitude according to Tatvadarashi Bramhapadadheesh Mahapurush Shri Anand Yogi Anandmay ji who gave this gratitude a following definition derived from Geeta Shastra:

    The Divine Wisdom of Gratitude:

Gratitude- means remaining ever thankful—through thought, word, and deed—to the givers of virtues, wisdom, bliss, peace, and strength, including the blissful Lord-Father, Om Anandmay (as taught in Geeta 18/73).

It also means recognizing oneself as indebted to benefactors such as providers of wealth, laborers, trees, plants, and animals—and serving them to the best of one’s ability with care and reverence.

A truly grateful heart causes the eyes of a human to glisten with joy.

One who is unaware of the virtue of gratitude belongs to the category of animals.

If a person’s intellect does not weep before the blissful Lord-Father Om Anandmay for relief from mental afflictions like lust and anger, then their ego-driven mind will make them weep for a lifetime—due to physical, financial, or social suffering.
