Arabian Nights

What’s the first book you ever finished and still remember to this day?

Tales of the Arabian Nights is a classic collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. I read this read in my childhood nearly 5-6 standard, and I still remember this book.

This is a magnificent collection of ancient tales told by the sultana Scheherazade, who relates them as entertainment for her jealous and murderous husband Sultan Shahryar, hoping to keep him amused and herself alive.

Stories like “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves”, “Aladdin’s Wonderful Magic Lamp”, “The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor” etc are my favourite.

What a wonderful trip down memory lane! One Thousand and One Nights is one of those timeless classics that leaves a lasting impression on readers, especially when discovered in childhood. Your post beautifully captures the sense of wonder and adventure that these stories inspire.

I particularly enjoyed how you highlighted the brilliance of Scheherazade, whose storytelling was not merely entertainment but a means of survival. The frame story itself is as fascinating as the tales it contains, reminding us of the power of imagination, wisdom, and words.
