Godan

Which book’s world would be the absolute worst to live in?

The novel portrays the struggles of Indian peasants, poverty, caste discrimination, exploitation by landlords and moneylenders, and the inequalities of rural society.

Main story:
The central character is Hori Mahato, a poor farmer who dreams of owning a cow. In his village, a cow symbolizes prosperity, social respect, and religious merit. Hori believes that owning one will bring happiness and dignity to his family.

Hori purchases a cow from Bhola, a cowherd, but his happiness is short-lived. His brother Heera becomes jealous, and the cow is poisoned. Heera runs away, leaving Hori to face the consequences.

Hori is already burdened by debt, taxes, and social obligations. When his son Gobar develops a relationship with Jhunia, an unmarried woman from another community, the village elders condemn the family. Gobar leaves for the city, while Hori and his wife, Dhania, take responsibility for Jhunia.

Hori continues working hard to support his family, but exploitation by moneylenders, landlords, and religious authorities keeps him trapped in poverty. Despite his suffering, he remains deeply concerned about his social reputation and religious duties.

Eventually, Hori becomes physically exhausted and seriously ill. He dies without fulfilling his lifelong dream of performing godan, the ritual donation of a cow before death. In a deeply moving ending, Dhania offers the small amount of money they have to a priest in place of a cow.

The novel ends tragically, showing how poverty can prevent even a hardworking and honest person from achieving his simplest dreams

A powerful and heartbreaking choice! Godaan by Munshi Premchand portrays a world where poverty, social injustice, and exploitation leave ordinary people struggling for even their simplest dreams. Hori’s story is especially moving because, despite his honesty and hard work, he never escapes the cycle of debt and suffering. It reminds us that sometimes the worst world to live in is not an imaginary one, but a society where dignity and happiness are privileges rather than basic human rights. πŸ“šπŸ’”

In Italy medieval times there was a landpachtsysteem that made all Italians, owner or not, think twice about eroding soil, as a worker or owner, nobody profits in the tragedy of the commons
